Why Choose Our “WeLL!” Memory Playing Cards as Therapy Tools?
1. Supports Emotional Expression and Processing
Memory games provide a structured yet comfortable way to process emotions, helping individuals explore their feelings without pressure. Flipping cards and matching pairs can bring focus and grounding, while also creating openings for clients to express emotions. Therapists can incorporate prompts or visual cues on the cards to encourage gentle conversations around specific emotions, triggers, or coping mechanisms.
Key benefits:
- Creates a safe space for emotional expression
- Helps individuals identify and articulate feelings
- Encourages mindful reflection and grounding
2. Promotes Cognitive Engagement and Memory Retention
“WeLL!” Memory Playing Cards are ideal for cognitive stimulation, making them particularly useful in cognitive and occupational therapies. They help enhance memory, attention, and problem-solving skills, providing mental stimulation that’s both challenging and enjoyable. For individuals recovering from trauma or those with cognitive impairments, memory games aid in rebuilding mental sharpness and focus.
3. Encourages Social Interaction and Communication
Memory games encourage interaction between therapist and client, creating a relaxed and positive environment for conversation. Playing together helps build rapport, enhances communication, and reduces social anxiety. This social engagement is beneficial for those struggling with social skills, loneliness, or social anxiety, as it fosters safe and enjoyable connections.
4. Reduces Anxiety and Promotes Relaxation
Playing memory cards requires focus and attention, which can act as a form of active mindfulness. This helps individuals shift their focus away from anxious thoughts and toward the present moment. The repetitive nature of memory games has a calming effect, making them excellent for individuals managing stress or anxiety, as well as those working on mindfulness in therapy.
5. Improves Motor Skills and Coordination
For individuals with fine motor challenges or physical impairments, memory games provide an opportunity to practice and improve motor skills. Handling cards, flipping them, and positioning them helps develop hand-eye coordination and fine motor control in a way that feels rewarding and fun, ideal for occupational therapy and physical rehabilitation.
6. Supports Emotional Regulation and Self-Control
Memory games require patience, focus, and self-control, all of which are critical components of emotional regulation. By practicing these skills in a game setting, individuals learn to handle frustration, maintain composure, and self-soothe—skills that transfer to real-life situations. This benefit is particularly useful for children and individuals with behavioral challenges.
7. Builds Confidence and Self-Esteem
Mastering memory games can boost self-esteem, especially for individuals in therapy who may struggle with confidence or self-worth. Successfully completing games or winning rounds gives individuals a sense of accomplishment and reinforces positive self-perception. This confidence-building effect is beneficial for anyone in therapy, especially those working on self-image or recovering from trauma.
8. Promotes Executive Functioning Skills
“WeLL!” Memory Playing Cards help improve executive functions, including planning, organization, and flexible thinking. These skills are valuable for individuals with ADHD, traumatic brain injuries, or executive functioning disorders. By engaging in a structured game with clear rules and goals, individuals practice organizing their thoughts, strategizing, and adapting to new information.
9. Encourages Positive Therapeutic Engagement
Therapy can feel intimidating or intense for some clients, but memory games provide a fun, low-stress way to engage. They help break down barriers to participation, making therapy more accessible and enjoyable. For children, adolescents, or those new to therapy, these cards offer a playful entry point into meaningful therapeutic work.

5 Ways To Play!
Memory/Match Game
1. Memory/Match Game
Place all the cards picture side down on a flat surface. The first player turns over two (2) cards. If the cards match, then all players say, “Very good” (with a loud hand clap), “Very good” (with another loud hand clap), “Yay” (with arms in the air in the sign of a V). The player then puts the matching cards to the side and turns over two more cards. If they match, repeat until they don’t match. If two cards do not match, then return them face down in their original spot, then all players put their hands up in the “I don’t know” gesture and then laugh gently. It is then the next player’s turn.
One Set Game
2. One Set Game
Choose one card color. For example, take out all the yellow “I am” cards and get them ready to play. You can choose the blue or pink cards. The point is to play with one color only. Place the cards picture side down on a flat surface. Turn over two (2) cards. If the cards match, then all the players say, “Very good” (with a loud hand clap), “Very good” (with another loud hand clap), “Yay” (with arms in the air in the sign of a V). Then you set your matching cards to the side. If the two cards do not match, then return them face down in their original spot, then all the players put their hands up in the “I don’t know” gesture and then laugh gently. For a longer game, you can play with two (2) color sets at the same time.
Speak-Out-Loud Game
3. Speak-Out-Loud Game
Place all the cards picture side down on a flat surface. Turn over one card, show it to the other players and read it out loud. Then all the players say, “Very good” (with a loud hand clap), “Very good” ( with another loud hand clap), “Yay” (with arms in the air in the sign of a V). Then you set the card to the side. Each player gets a turn until all cards are gone.
Group Talk Game
4. Group Talk Game
Play this game in a therapeutic or educational group setting. Place the cards face down. The first player picks one card and talks about it. They can talk about a memory, their feelings, or a wish they have. Put the card back where it came from, and the next player picks a card and repeats the process until everyone has had at least one turn.
One-to-One Talk Game
5. One-to-One Talk Game
This game is meant to be played in a therapeutic or educational setting. Hold the card deck in your hands and have the client or student choose one card. Ask them to read the card out loud and talk about it. They can talk about a memory, their feelings, or a wishful scenario that facilitates expression.
