Supporting cognitive recovery for individuals with a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)?

Our “WeLL!” Memory Playing Cards are expertly designed to aid TBI rehabilitation through engaging, brain-boosting gameplay that improves cognitive, emotional, and social skills. From enhancing memory recall to supporting focus and problem-solving, these cards are a versatile tool that provides both challenge and fun in a supportive, low-stress format. Suitable for use in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and at home, these cards can be an important part of TBI therapy and recovery.

Why Choose “WeLL!” Memory Playing Cards for TBI Recovery?

1. Improves Memory and Recall

Memory impairment is a common symptom of TBI, and our cards offer an enjoyable way to exercise memory retention and recall. As players match cards, they work on remembering card placements and details, which helps stimulate areas of the brain related to memory. Regular play enhances short-term memory and can improve retention and recall skills over time.

Key benefits:

  • Boosts memory retention and recall ability
  • Strengthens both visual and spatial memory
  • Provides a safe, structured way to practice memory skills

2. Enhances Focus and Attention Span

Maintaining attention can be challenging after a TBI. Our memory cards encourage focused play, which helps improve attention span in a gradual, supportive way. Players practice maintaining concentration and following through on a goal, which is beneficial for building mental endurance and focus post-injury.

3. Supports Cognitive Flexibility and Problem-Solving

Recovering from TBI often requires re-learning problem-solving skills, and memory games provide a safe, enjoyable format for this. Our cards encourage players to adapt their strategies, boosting cognitive flexibility. This ability to adjust and think dynamically is crucial for problem-solving, and playing memory games helps develop this skill in a structured, encouraging environment.

4. Promotes Visual Processing and Perception

The “WeLL!” memory playing cards are designed to support visual perception and processing, both of which are frequently affected by TBI. As players focus on card patterns, colors, and symbols, they engage in tasks that strengthen their visual discrimination and processing speed, which is essential for everyday activities like reading and recognizing faces.

5. Builds Confidence and Motivation in Recovery

Rehabilitation can be a challenging journey, and success in memory games provides a boost in self-confidence. Each game completed helps players see measurable progress, building their confidence and motivation to continue practicing and improving.

6. Encourages Emotional Regulation and Patience

Memory games foster a calm, focused experience that encourages emotional regulation. By handling frustration in a game setting, players can practice patience, manage stress, and learn to approach challenges calmly. This practice supports emotional resilience and can improve self-regulation in real-world situations.

7. Supports Fine Motor Skills and Coordination

For many TBI survivors, fine motor skills and coordination need redevelopment. Our memory playing cards are ideal for exercising hand-eye coordination, finger strength, and motor control. Picking up, flipping, and arranging cards helps develop motor skills in a gradual, manageable way that feels satisfying and fun.

8. Reduces Mental Fatigue with a Balanced Challenge

Our memory playing cards are designed to provide a balanced level of challenge that’s engaging without being overwhelming. This balance makes them a great tool for individuals with TBI, as they help reduce mental fatigue while providing just enough challenge to stimulate cognitive function and keep players engaged.

9. Provides a Positive and Therapeutic Social Activity

Social connection is a key component of TBI recovery, and our memory games offer a way to interact with family, friends, and caregivers in a positive, therapeutic setting. Playing together encourages conversation, teamwork, and connection—promoting a supportive social environment that helps reduce isolation and increase engagement.

10. Flexible and Adaptable for Any Recovery Stage

Our “WeLL!” memory playing cards are adaptable, allowing you to adjust the complexity to match each player’s ability level and recovery progress. This flexibility ensures the game remains accessible and beneficial, whether used in early recovery or as cognitive skills advance.

How “WeLL!” Memory Playing Cards Support TBI Rehabilitation:

5 Ways To Play!

Memory/Match Game

1. Memory/Match Game

Place all the cards picture side down on a flat surface. The first player turns over two (2) cards. If the cards match, then all players say, “Very good” (with a loud hand clap), “Very good” (with another loud hand clap), “Yay” (with arms in the air in the sign of a V). The player then puts the matching cards to the side and turns over two more cards. If they match, repeat until they don’t match. If two cards do not match, then return them face down in their original spot, then all players put their hands up in the “I don’t know” gesture and then laugh gently. It is then the next player’s turn.

One Set Game

2. One Set Game

Choose one card color. For example, take out all the yellow “I am” cards and get them ready to play. You can choose the blue or pink cards. The point is to play with one color only. Place the cards picture side down on a flat surface. Turn over two (2) cards. If the cards match, then all the players say, “Very good” (with a loud hand clap), “Very good” (with another loud hand clap), “Yay” (with arms in the air in the sign of a V). Then you set your matching cards to the side. If the two cards do not match, then return them face down in their original spot, then all the players put their hands up in the “I don’t know” gesture and then laugh gently. For a longer game, you can play with two (2) color sets at the same time.

Speak-Out-Loud Game

3. Speak-Out-Loud Game

Place all the cards picture side down on a flat surface. Turn over one card, show it to the other players and read it out loud. Then all the players say, “Very good” (with a loud hand clap), “Very good” ( with another loud hand clap), “Yay” (with arms in the air in the sign of a V). Then you set the card to the side. Each player gets a turn until all cards are gone.

Group Talk Game

4. Group Talk Game

Play this game in a therapeutic or educational group setting. Place the cards face down. The first player picks one card and talks about it. They can talk about a memory, their feelings, or a wish they have. Put the card back where it came from, and the next player picks a card and repeats the process until everyone has had at least one turn.

One-to-One Talk Game

5. One-to-One Talk Game

This game is meant to be played in a therapeutic or educational setting. Hold the card deck in your hands and have the client or student choose one card. Ask them to read the card out loud and talk about it. They can talk about a memory, their feelings, or a wishful scenario that facilitates expression.
